COG Volunteers As Now

About COG - The Full Story

COG

Cardross Organic Garden is an offshoot of Cardross Climate Action Network. Our vision is to create and grow a thriving Community Organic Garden, that is a hub for all people in the village.  The Adopt a Station Programme gave us an excellent opportunity and location from which to do this while making our local station more welcoming to users.

Cardross Station was opened in 1858 and its brick architecture has always made it an attractive building, unfortunately its former beautiful and much renowned gardens had fallen into neglect over decades. Working as COG our volunteers want to restore those beautiful areas and make our station prestigious again.

COG adopted the station in March 2022 and over approximately 14 months to May 2023 our volunteers worked determinedly, despite the challenges and at times back breaking “unseen ground work”, with the goal of transforming the station including platforms, carpark and embankments back to beautiful and productive spaces.

Volunteering
In April 2022 we started with 10 volunteers and numbers to date have increased to approximately 20. We have a varied group of volunteers each with their own skills and we try to encourage anyone who would like to join us regardless of experience or age. We encourage community gardening by having bi-weekly meetups and on the first Saturday of every month.  We recruit volunteers by word-of-mouth whilst we work at the station, by posters, social media sites including COG’s own Facebook and Instagram pages, articles in local and regional papers, and community magazines.
